SYSTEMS SPECIALIST
2010-05-01
We looking for a dynamic, energetic IT specialist who is interested in technology, not just support – and understands the difference and importance of both.
This role is responsible for managing the day-today IT operations – both in providing front-line support and running the backend systems.
You are responsible for overseeing the IT function as a whole, working with office management to understand the company needs with the support of the regional IT team.
The role:
- Provide maximum availability of computer systems throughout the agency. Oversee the IT function – from providing front-line support to employees to managing and troubleshooting backend systems, and working with office management to develop a plan for IT and budget for each calendar year.
- Implement IT Governance/Security policies and procedures, ensure compliance with them, and be responsible for reporting on compliance.
- Take a leading role in guiding the agency on best uses of IT systems and technology across all disciplines, and teach employees about technology.
The skills:
- Proven ability to diagnose problems, perform complex troubleshooting, and provide support for Windows and Mac OS X desktops. Have good experience with technologies such as Windows Server, Linux, Cisco (routers/firewalls), VPN, SQL (MS-SQL/mySQL), web technologies, standards-based email, other open-source technologies. You are comfortable working in a mixed infrastructure environment.
- Excellent skills with common end-user applications such as Microsoft Office, and are familiar with design applications such as the Adobe CS3 suite.
- Strong knowledge and experience with implementing/supporting connectivity (LAN/WAN/Internet), security, wireless, and fixed/mobile communications.
- Ability to learn new technologies and support them. Can manage projects, system implementations, and upgrades while minimizing business interruption.
- Technical certifications or qualifications are an advantage but not a requirement
The candidate:
- You are outgoing, personable, independent, flexible, and able to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment. You are a logically-minded individual who takes the initiative, is self-managing, and has both strong time management and organizational skills. You are trustworthy, dependable, and respectful.
- You have good communication and people skills, with the ability to adapt how you communicate to your audience. This means speaking bits and bytes to IT people, but can change the message when speaking to non-technical people. You present good and bad news with equal vigor, and do not believe in speaking only when spoken to.
- You are curious about technology, continually look at ways of improving the technology environment, and can tap into multiple resources for support, finding new technologies, and providing advice on the use of technology to the company.
- You are looking for a challenge where you can expand your knowledge and experience in many directions.

Un-intern
Each year, we run an internship programme, open to all Hong Kong universities. The programme is now in its fourth year and provides opportunities for successful applicants to work directly with our most talented people across the agency. Which is nothing like a regular internship and that's why we call it the Un-Internship.
Application submission starts in April and the 'Un-Intership' programme' runs throughout the summer.
